Help shape research to improve care for people with brain tumours
Use your experience to make a difference in how care is given to people living with a brain tumour.
Researchers at Cardiff University would like to involve two members of the public to become part of the COMBaT Study (Core Outcomes to Measure clinical needs for people with primary Brain Tumours). The study is looking to assess the needs of people living with a type of brain tumour called glioma and what is most important to them.
- What experience do I need to help?
Lived experience of gliomas or other types of brain tumour, either as:
- A patient who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour, or
- A carer or family member who has supported someone with a brain tumour
While not required, the following could also be helpful:
- An interest in health or cancer research
- Willingness to share your views and experiences.
- Comfortable in using email and video calls (Teams)
- Ability to read and comment on Word? documents
- What will I be asked to do?
- Attend regular team meetings (mostly online, approximately once every eight weeks).
- Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials in advance.
- Read and comment on study documents (e.g. surveys, information sheets)
- Share your views and lived experience to shape the research.
- Provide feedback on:
- Survey and workshop design.
- Data analysis and interpretation
- Study materials and communications.
- Help ensure the research reflects what matters most to patients and carers
- How long will I be needed for?
- You will be involved in the COMBaT study until February 2027, which is when the study is expected to end.
- You will be part of the project throughout its different stages, from planning and data collection to analysis and sharing results.
- The team is happy to work with you to agree on how much time you can give and when.

- What support is offered?
Cardiff University will:
- Cover reasonable travel expenses and additional carer or childcare costs,
- Offer payment for time of £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).
- You will receive training, mentoring, and support from experienced public involvement professionals.
