Are you a young person with Type 1 diabetes or does your child have Type 1 diabetes?

You could use your experiences to help researchers develop a research intervention study exploring the prevention of disordered eating in paediatric diabetes care.

Who can get involved?

People who live in Wales:

  • lived with Type 1 diabetes as a young person
  • have a child who lives with Type 1 diabetes
  • have experience of disordered eating and Type 1 diabetes
  • live in Wales
  • are comfortable in sharing their experiences of living with diabetes and disordered eating with the study team and other public members

The study team welcomes expressions of interest from less often heard individuals and communities so would particularly welcome applications from ethnic minority and under-served groups.

You need to be registered with the involvement community to submit an expression of interest. Members of the public who have not registered are invited to submit a registration form to become part of the involvement community.

Background information

Living with Type 1 diabetes may have an impact on a person's physical and mental wellbeing and could lead to a higher risk of developing an eating disorder. This could be for several reasons such as the frequent monitoring of weight and sugar levels, focusing on food intake or the negative assumptions around diabetes.

Researchers at Cardiff Metropolitan University and doctors from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board would like input from ‘experts by experience’ to develop a study looking at preventing disordered eating in type 1 diabetes.

The team will adapt treatments that are already exist for disordered eating and look at how suitable they are for young people living with type 1 diabetes.

What is required?

Up to five people to become part of a public advisory group. You would be asked to contribute to discussions and share thoughts, ideas and reflections with the researchers about the study.

You would be asked to attend three, two-hour face to face workshops. Each session would begin with a short presentation and participants would then discuss and feedback on each topic.

Session one: Feedback from the early research and review of available interventions
Session two: Content review and additions/amendments needed
Session three: Evaluation review.

What reward is offered for taking part?

The study team will:

  • Cover reasonable travel expenses to attend meetings.
  • Offer payment for time of £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).

For those in receipt of state benefit confidential advice is available via the Benefits Advice Service for Involvement.

As a registered member of the community, you will also have access to support from the Communications, Engagement and Involvement team and the Health and Care Research Wales training programme.

What further support is available?

You will be supported by the study team and provided guidance around the study and what is needed.

As talking about Type 1 Diabetes and Disordered Eating can be distressing, all members would be signposted to their medical teams and appropriate charities/ support services for further information.
