Dr Frank Sanders
Health and Care Research Wales Faculty award:
Award: Emerging Researcher Scheme
Research interest: Translational research - diabetic retinopathy
Biography
Frank Sanders is an ophthalmology trainee in Wales, with a research interest in diabetic retinopathy (DR) and lipid metabolism in ocular disease.
Frank completed the MBPhD programme at the University of Cambridge. He was a Scholar at Magdalene College, Cambridge and was funded through the Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (TMAT) programme sponsored by GSK and the Wellcome Trust. The TMAT programme supported a PhD in biochemistry investigating the triglycerides of hepatic de novo lipogenesis and their link to a number of systemic metabolic diseases. This was accompanied by teaching undergraduates the fundamentals of biochemistry and molecular biology in Magdalene College.
Since starting specialty training, he has completed various research projects including analysis of patient reported outcome measures in macula disease. He aims to apply his skills and knowledge gained in these fields of DR to further understand potential biomarkers, gain mechanistic insights into the pathophysiology of DR and understand the real-world impact on people with diabetes.
