Dr Benjamin Jelley

Specialty Lead for Ageing

Dr Jelley is a clinical academic working in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Cardiff University.

He is a Geriatrician specialising in stroke medicine and particularly relishes the challenge of optimising recovery post-stroke.

His research interests therefore centre in the field of stroke medicine and its rehabilitation but he has also worked on projects looking at cognitive impairment due to the crossover with post-stroke cognitive impairment.

With Cardiff University he is a senior clinical lecturer and programme director for the MSc Clinical Geriatrics. Through this role he is helping future researchers to develop their knowledge and skills to become academic geriatricians of the future.

In his NHS role he has overseen a blossoming of the research portfolio for geriatrics in the department and has worked to encourage new researchers to take on the role of Principal Investigator to increase research capacity. It is this reduced capacity of interested clinicians for research in the older person that is a priority for his work and he hopes to increase the Welsh capacity for recruiting older patients into clinically relevant research to help future generations of clinicians provide the optimum care for this important group of patients.
