Jonathan has been a social work academic at Cardiff University for 28 years. Before that he worked as a school teacher, group worker in a therapeutic community and probation officer. He started his academic career as an exclusively qualitative researcher and then later moved to doing more quantitative, evaluative research after training in Epidemiology.
He is Deputy Director of CASCADE, the Children's Social Care Research and Development Centre, which is the largest children’s social care research centre in the UK. He also led the University's successful funding bid to set up the Centre for Adult Social Care Research (CARE). He is a Health and Care Research Wales Senior Research Leader and Specialty co-Lead for social care research. He is also a registered social worker.
