
Health and Care Research Wales Faculty announces its first Emerging Leaders

The Health and Care Research Wales Faculty has announced the appointment of its first group of Emerging Leaders, marking an important step in recognising and supporting the next generation of health and social care research leaders in Wales.
The Emerging Leaders will receive funding of up to £5,000 to support their professional development and career progression, which can include attending specialist training courses, conferences, accessing executive coaching, or visits to advance national and international collaborations. The funding is intended to directly support an individual’s career development.
This new award, launched as a pilot for 2025/26, was open to Faculty members who have demonstrated a strong track record toward becoming independent researchers.
Professor Monica Busse, Faculty Director at Health and Care Research Wales, said:
The appointment as a Health and Care Research Wales Emerging Leader is a formal recognition of our future health and social care research leaders and their substantial contributions to the research community in Wales.”

- Dr Anwen Cope, Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health
- Dr Julie Latchem-Hastings, Senior Lecturer
- Dr Samuel Chawner, Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow
- Dr Mark Davies, Clinical Senior Lecturer; Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology; Honorary Consultant in Clinical Genetics; Honorary Clinical Professor
- Dr Kelly Morgan, Deputy Director of the School Health Research Network/ Senior Research Fellow
Alongside continuing their structured leadership and other development opportunities relevant to their own research portfolios, the new Emerging Leaders will play an active role in building research capacity and capability across Wales.
Professor Busse said: “We look forward to their varied contributions which we believe will be of great benefit to our community.
"Applications were judged by a panel of Health and Care Research Wales Senior Research Leaders, who focused on leadership potential, research excellence and a clear commitment to the Faculty and its goals.
The pilot is part of Health and Care Research Wales Faculty’s ongoing efforts to foster a thriving, inclusive, and forward-looking research environment.”
