PhD studentship: Migration, labour abuse and modern slavery in adult social care settings in Wales

About the Project

Cardiff University School of Social Sciences, supported by Wales Graduate School for the Social Sciences (WGSSS) (ESRC DTP) and Health Care Research Wales, invites applications for PhD study for the following PhD project for October 2025 entry.

Project description:

This doctoral studentship seeks to understand the prevalence of labour abuse and modern slavery in Wales’ adult social care sector. The project aims to specifically explore migrant workers’ experiences of working with people with care and support needs (e.g. people with dementia, learning disabilities) in care homes, supported living and private homes, and understand contributing factors to labour abuse, assess professionals’ awareness, and identify effective risk management solutions. The 2023–2024 UK Labour Market Enforcement Strategy identified the care sector as high-risk for labour market non-compliance, encompassing modern slavery and other forms of labour abuse. This poses significant risks to both workers and care recipients.

 Possible research questions could include:

  1. How widespread are labour abuse and modern slavery in the social care sector? Which groups are most at risk, and what are the key drivers?
  2. What is the level of awareness among social care professionals about these issues?
  3. What are the challenges in preventing, detecting, and responding to modern slavery risks?
