Panel Y Ddraig Grant Scheme
Powys Teachining Health Board's School of Research, Development and Innovation is excited to announce the fourth round of the Panel Y Ddraig Grant Scheme, which provides an opportunity to benefit all health and care areas across Powys by improving the uptake of research, innovation and improvement.
To improve and grow the quality and impact of their activities they need to continue to encourage a progressive culture where innovation is at the fore front, utilise a research active organisation, and strive for continuous improvement.
N.B. the scheme supports projects including research aimed at innovative solutions, technological implementations to enhance health and care, technology for health and care delivery and evaluating or developing new processes and ways of working. The scheme does not cover staff salaries, venue hire, travel expenses, or MSc/ILM courses.

Panel Y Ddraig Grant Application Guidance
Powys wants to be recognised as a place that is confident and successful in delivering research, innovation and quality improvement activities and applying tools and techniques into their day-to-day working, which will improve patient care or staff wellbeing. To improve and grow the quality and impact of their activities they need to continue to encourage a progressive culture where innovation is at the fore front; utilise a research active organisation and strive for continuous improvement.
The grant scheme offers an opportunity to benefit all health and care areas across Powys, subject to a successful application to the School of Research, Development and Innovation and supported by Powys Charitable Funds Committee. Agreed funding will be allocated to individual projects, subject to successful application.
It will be a requirement of the application that any projects seeking support from this fund will be asked to confirm they are not receiving financial support from any other funding source.
Successful applicants are required to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of their application once implemented and provide regular updates to the School of Research, Development, and Innovation using reporting templates provided by the school.
All procurement and spend associated with the application will be subject to normal Financial Control Procedures, levels of authorisation and governance review(s) for assurance.
What can be supported?
All applications for Research, Innovation and Improvement ideas will be considered. Some examples of projects that can be supported through Panel Y Ddraig Grants are:
- Research projects that seek to identify innovative solutions.
- Implementing technological solutions that will enhance the delivery of health and care, e.g., Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Apps.
- Implementing technology that will support the delivery of health and care solutions, e.g., Digital, Patient Records, Infrastructure.
- Evaluating, defining, or implementing different ways of working.
- Defining and developing new processes.
The above list is not exhaustive, exceptions apply, and staff are encouraged to contact the School of Research Development and Innovation with any questions, or to discuss a potential idea before submitting.
What cannot be supported?
This grant scheme does not cover:
- staff salaries but can be used to support staff development
- venue hire
- travel expenses
- MSc or ILM Courses

Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until the closing date on Monday 16 June 2025. The School of Research, Development, and Innovation reserves the right to close this grant early should all funding have been allocated.
