Do you want to help shape the future of eye care services?

Join the new Centre for Vision Services Research as a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Lead.

The Centre for Vision Services Research started in April 2025. Its goal is to make health and eye care services better for people who use eye clinics or have sight problems. They want to focus their research on listening to the experiences and opinions of patients, caregivers, and the wider community to help guide their work.

What experience do I need to help?
  • Have used or currently use eye care services or have sight problems
  • Have an interest in improving health and care services for those with sight problems
  • You don’t need any research experience just a willingness to share your perspective, listen to others and work as part of a team.
What will I be asked to do?

As a PPI Lead, you will:

  • Co-chair a core group of public and patient members (around four meetings a year. Three online and one in person in Cardiff) who will help us prioritise research ideas and share our findings with the public in clear and meaningful ways.
  • Take part in Centre management meetings (three per year, online) to influence our overall direction, including strategy and how resources are used.
  • Attend around ten meetings per year in total, mainly online.
How long will I be needed for?
  • You will be required to be in post for the time the centre is funded, up to 2030.
What are some of the benefits for me?
  • Influence eye health research by sharing your experiences and views
  • Learn how research projects are designed and carried out
  • Gain skills in reviewing and discussing health research
  • Meet researchers and other public contributors
What support is offered?

Cardiff University will:

  • Cover reasonable travel expenses
  • Offer payment for time of £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).
  • You won’t be working alone, you’ll be supported by our PPI Co-ordinator, Centre Manager, and Administrator. Together, you’ll help make sure the Centre listens, learns, and acts on the views of patients, carers and the public.

If you are receiving any benefits, you can access confidential advice from the Benefits Advice Service for Involvement.
