Project title: Use of peri-operative antibiotics with no antibiotics in people undergoing excision of ulcerated skin cancers


Biography

Dr Rachel Abbott is a consultant dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.  She was supported by an NHS Research Time Award 2021- 2024.

Her main research and clinical interest is skin cancer.  She has co-authored several Cochrane reviews, led an observational multi-centre study to investigate surgical site infection in ulcerated skin cancers (OASIS study) and collaborated with Dr Julie Peconi at Swansea University on the ‘Sunproofed’ study.

She is currently Chief Investigator for the EXCISE trial: Should antibiotics be prescribed to patients during skin cancer surgery to prevent infection? | Health Care Research Wales

Rachel is also interested in sustainable healthcare. She was Chair of the British Association of Dermatologists Sustainability Sub-Committee (2022-2024).
