Health Research Authority response to World Health Organisation best practices guidance on clinical trials

21 November

The World Health Organization (WHO) has published new guidance to improve the design, conduct and oversight of clinical trials across the world, aimed at supporting what the WHO has described as strong research and development ecosystems that support well-designed and well-implemented clinical trials.

The Health Research Authority (HRA) was named in the report as an example of an organisation providing a single system for applying for regulatory and ethics permissions and approvals for research on health and social care.

Naho Yamazaki, Deputy Director of Policy and Partnerships at the HRA said: “We welcome the publication of the World Health Organization’s guidance on best practice for clinical trials and we have a part to play in meeting this in the UK.

“The UK has a strong clinical trial infrastructure and is a major contributor to the global clinical trial ecosystem. The HRA plays a key part in this, acting as a connector and enabler by managing research approvals and underpinning the work of others through our digital systems.”
