New Swansea Bay cancer research centre boosts Wales' oncology capabilities

Our National Director of Support and Delivery, Dr Nicola Williams, has hailed the launch of a new clinical suite at Swansea’s Singleton Hospital which will carry out a range of oncology and haematology trials.

For the first time, the award-winning research team based within Singleton’s Cancer Institute, which has helped revolutionise cancer treatments around the world, has a dedicated space for patients taking part in trials.

Funding from the Welsh Government via Health and Care Research Wales has supported the growth of cancer research in the health board.

The new clinical suite features two specialised rooms. One room is equipped with four treatment chairs for patients involved in various trials. The other room provides a private area for patient examinations, assessments and one-on-one discussions.

This new space ensures that patients participating in these trials are seen in one convenient location.

Dr Williams said, “The launch of this new clinical trial space at Singleton Hospital is another example of the growing importance of research within hospitals here in Wales.

“Swansea Bay University Health Board is among many health boards now equipped with dedicated spaces to ensure we can make significant contributions to national and global studies, keeping us at the forefront of health and social care.”

Professor John Wagstaff, a medical oncologist pivotal to Swansea's cancer research success since 2003 and now Emeritus Professor of Oncology at Swansea University, officially opened the new clinical trials suite.
