Are you interested in public health improvement research?

Provide advice, guidance and constructive feedback on the work of a well-established public health research centre in Wales.

DECIPHer is a public health improvement research centre based at Cardiff University, established in 2010. It focuses on developing, evaluating, and implementing interventions to improve health and reduce inequalities in Wales and beyond.

As part of the Health and Care Research Wales community, DECIPHer has recently secured funding for the next five years (2025-2030) and is looking to recruit one to two public members to help monitor its research strategy and progress during this period.

What experience do I need to help?

  • Have an interest in improving health, and reducing health inequalities, for people in Wales and beyond

What will I be asked to do?
  • Join an External Advisory Board to provide advice, guidance, and critical feedback on DECIPHer’s research and progress
  • Help monitor the Centre’s objectives and its public involvement strategy
  • Occasionally be contacted for expert advice between meetings.
How long will I be needed for?

You’ll be asked to attend annual meetings that last between one and half and three hours. In addition, you'll need to set aside one to two hours for preparation and reading before each meeting. The commitment will span from 2025 to 2030, with ongoing communication between meetings for any expert advice that may be required.

What are some of the benefits for me?
  • Shape public health research that aims to improve lives and reduce inequalities.
  • Gain insight into how research projects are developed and implemented.
  • Develop transferable skills like critical thinking and communication.
What support is offered?

  • Cover reasonable travel expenses and additional carer or childcare costs.
  • Offer payment for time of up to £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).
