
Dr Sam Chawner

Biography
Sam is currently a Senior Research Fellow at Cardiff University School of Medicine who studies the causes and development of child mental health using cutting-edge mental health data science and genetic methodologies.
He obtained his BA degree in Natural Sciences (Psychology) from the University of Cambridge, and completed his PhD at Cardiff University Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics & Genomics. He currently holds a prestigious Wellcome Trust Career Development Award, focusing on the epidemiology and aetiology of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). He is co-investigator of the IMAGINE-ID study, which examines the mental health of children with rare genetic conditions, and is passionate about public engagement with diverse audiences to raise awareness of genomics and mental health.
Sam is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in research, highlighted by his Health and Care Research Wales 2024 Research Rising Star Award.
