Health and Care Research Wales Faculty Leadership Development Programme

Health and Care Research Wales Faculty

Leadership Development Programme Expression of Interest 2025

The Faculty is pleased to open the third cohort of the Leadership Development programme that we have commissioned from Leaderful Action.

The feedback we have received about the programme has been really positive.

“The Health and Care Research Wales Faculty Leadership course has made a big difference to my career, and it has given me time to stop, reflect and think about what we’re doing day-to-day. It integrates models and theories to help us un-pick complex problems and consider the right way forward. And it helps to build relationships with other people who are in similar roles and think about different ways of working.Claire Job, Research Capacity Building Collaboration (RCBC) First into Research Fellow

“The leadership course has been fantastic. It's helped me to reflect on my skill sets and improve on areas that will help me be a better research leader, a better research manager, and help deliver great quality research for the benefit of public, patients and the research team that I work with.Dr Ashra Khanom, Health Research Fellow

“The leadership course has given me an insight into what's needed to be a good and effective leader in the future. I'm still at the early stages of my career, but it’s has given me an idea of the skills that I'll need to develop into an effective leader of the future.Dr Leigh Sanyaolu, Health and Care Research Wales/NIHR Fellow

The Faculty Leadership Development programme is endorsed by The Institute of Leadership and Management and will run from October 2025 to July 2026. Sessions will run at 6 weekly intervals and be mostly online with a combination of e-learning, practical group discussions and action learning sets. The launch event will be in person on 2 October in Cardiff.

The programme will cover modules such as Emotional Intelligence, High Performing Teams, Agile Leadership, Change Leadership and Resilience and is designed to support researchers to see themselves as leaders and how they can lead and influence in their areas of expertise. Participants will also be offered psychometric profiling and up to three 1-2-1 coaching sessions.

The programme will run as a cohort of 15 Faculty members who will be identified via an Expression of Interest process. Priority for places will be given to those who are in or are approaching the final year of their personal awards. All successful candidates will need to clearly demonstrate how this programme will benefit them in progressing in their research career and be able to commit to attending at least 80% of the sessions.
