Have you or a loved one experienced jaw problems following head and neck cancer radiotherapy or bone-strengthening medications?

Researchers at Swansea Bay University Health Board are looking to develop a new treatment that could help people heal better and avoid painful complications.

The researchers are looking for people with personal experience of receiving treatment for head and neck cancer to help shape the study and make sure it’s acceptable for future patients. Your voice could help improve care for others and influence future research.

What experience do I need to help?

You can help if you:

  • Have experience of jaw problems after radiotherapy (osteoradionecrosis) or certain medications (osteonecrosis)
  • Care for someone with one of these conditions
  • Can talk clearly and simply about health topics
  • Are happy to read and comment on research documents
  • Want to help make the study better for patients

No research experience is needed, just your personal experience and willingness to get involved.

What will I be asked to do?
  • Read the trial documents, including the study plan and patient information sheet
  • Help explain the trial to patients in clear, everyday language
  • Share your personal experience to help make the study more relevant and accessible
  • Support the research team by acting as a patient advocate
How long will I be needed for?

The role will involve helping from time to time over a few weeks up to a few months. How long someone is involved for will depend on how quickly patients join the study.

What are some of the benefits for me?
  • Help improve care for people with serious jaw problems
  • Use your experience to shape a study that could lead to better treatments
  • Learn more about how health research works
  • Build confidence in reviewing and discussing health information
  • Be part of a team working to make research more patient-friendly
  • Contribute to a study that could lead to a larger national trial in the future
 What support is offered?
  • Cover reasonable travel expenses and additional carer or childcare costs
  • Offer payment for time of £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).
  • Supported by a member of the study team who will explain about the project and what is required.
