Help improve menopause and perimenopause treatment
Join a steering committee to help shape a study which aims to find out if adding testosterone to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) could improve menopause symptoms.
Researchers at the Centre for Trials Research, Cardiff University, are conducting a study to find out whether adding testosterone to standard hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can improve symptoms of menopause.
This opportunity is part of a funded research project, called ESTEEM (Evaluating the clinical and cost-effectivenesS of TEstosteronE to improve Menopause-related quality of life.), supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The trial will run from 2025 to 2028.
As a public contributor on the steering committee, you will help oversee the progress of the study+ and ensure it remains ethical, transparent and relevant to people with lived experience.
- What experience do I need to help?
- currently using HRT for perimenopause or menopause and still be experiencing symptoms
- to use Microsoft Word and join online meetings via video conferencing platforms
- understanding of clinical trials is helpful but not required training and support will be provided
- What will I be asked to do?
- You will attend steering committee meetings (approximately four to five across the whole the study) and review relevant documents.
- You’ll contribute your lived experience and perspective to help guide the study and ensure participants’ interests are considered.
- How long will I be needed for?
- You’ll be involved from Spring 2025 to 2028. Meetings will last one to two hours each, with one hour of preparation time for reviewing documents ahead of each meeting.

- What support is offered?
- Cover reasonable travel expenses and additional carer or childcare costs.
- Offer payment for time of £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).
- You’ll be supported by a dedicated public involvement lead, and any necessary training will be provided.
