Help improve menopause and perimenopause treatment

Join a steering committee to help shape a study which aims to find out if adding testosterone to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) could improve menopause symptoms.

Researchers at the Centre for Trials Research, Cardiff University, are conducting a study to find out whether adding testosterone to standard hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can improve symptoms of menopause. 

This opportunity is part of a funded research project, called ESTEEM (Evaluating the clinical and cost-effectivenesS of TEstosteronE to improve Menopause-related quality of life.), supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The trial will run from 2025 to 2028. 

As a public contributor on the  steering committee, you will help oversee the progress of the study+ and ensure it remains ethical, transparent and relevant to people with lived experience.

What experience do I need to help?
  • currently using HRT for perimenopause or menopause and still be experiencing symptoms
  • to use Microsoft Word and join online meetings via video conferencing platforms
  • understanding of clinical trials is helpful but not required training and support will be provided
What will I be asked to do?
  • You will attend steering committee meetings (approximately four to five across the whole the study) and review relevant documents.
  • You’ll contribute your lived experience and perspective to help guide the study and ensure participants’ interests are considered.
How long will I be needed for?
  • You’ll be involved from Spring 2025 to 2028. Meetings will last one to two hours each, with one hour of preparation time for reviewing documents ahead of each meeting.

 What support is offered?
  • Cover reasonable travel expenses and additional carer or childcare costs.
  • Offer payment for time of £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).
  • You’ll be supported by a dedicated public involvement lead, and any necessary training will be provided.
