Help researchers to improve bowel screening uptake.

Use your experience to identify barriers that prevent people with severe mental health from accessing screening services.

What experience do I need to help?

  • lived experience of bowel cancer
  • lived experience of or caring for someone with severe mental health issues
  • care for someone who did not participate in bowel cancer screening
  • live in Wales
  • be comfortable in looking at project documents and sharing your thoughts to the research team

More information

Researchers would like to develop a project that looks at why people with severe mental illness find it difficult to access health screening, including bowel cancer.

The research team would like to find out how many people with severe mental illness have taken part in bowel cancer screening, if any areas in Wales have lower rates of people taking part in the screening and look at any reasons why there are differences.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be asked to attend an online meeting or telephone call to discuss the research project with the research team.  You will look at the project information and give your feedback on how the project can be shaped to make sure the team reaches their aim of understanding screening uptake in people with severe mental illness.

How long will I be needed for?

There will be an initial meeting of 1.5 hours to discuss the research idea and regular meetings to develop the project up until the application is submitted.

Then there will be a further 2.5 hours to read the research information and plans and give your feedback and ideas.

If you are invited to become a co-applicant, you will be asked to attend regular meetings every three months, over the course of the project.

What are some of the benefits for me?

 Our team will:

  • offer payment for time of £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).
  • offer to be a co-applicant on the study
  • learn about how research is planned and run
  • build confidence in attending meetings and sharing your views

Have a look at our guidelines for more information about this.
