Help shape research into fibromyalgia treatment

Cardiff University is developing a new research study to explore whether Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) – a psychological therapy used to treat trauma – could also help reduce pain and improve quality of life for people living with fibromyalgia.

EMDR is already a proven treatment for trauma-related conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Researchers are now exploring whether it could also help reduce pain and improve quality of life for individuals living with fibromyalgia.  To ensure the research reflects the real needs and experiences of people with fibromyalgia, the team is inviting individuals with lived experience to participate in an online focus group. Their insights will help shape the study, making it more meaningful and patient-centred. Anyone interested in contributing to research that may lead to new treatment options for fibromyalgia is encouraged to get in touch. Information will be shared prior to the meeting so participants can review it in advance.

What experience do I need to help?

We’re looking for people who:

  • Have a diagnosis of fibromyalgia or have experienced symptoms consistent with fibromyalgia.
  • Are willing to share their views and experiences in a respectful online group setting.
  • Have an interest in helping shape research that could improve treatment options.
  • Are comfortable using Zoom or similar online platforms (we can offer support if needed).
  • You do not need any research, academic or clinical background - your experience is what matters most.
What will I be asked to do?

If you choose to take part, you’ll be invited to join a one-off, online focus group, lasting around 60 to 90 minutes.

During the session, you will be asked ask for your views on things like:

  • What it’s like to live with fibromyalgia
  • What kind of support or treatments have (or haven’t) helped
  • What you think about the idea of using EMDR therapy for fibromyalgia
  • What would make it easier or harder for people to take part in this kind of study

Everything you share will be kept confidential, and you can choose how much or how little you’d like to contribute.

How long will I be needed for?

You’ll take part in one online focus group during the week commencing 21 July 2025, which will last around 60 to 90 minutes.

We’ll send you some information about the project a few days in advance, so you have time to read before the session.

  • Contribute to patient-centred research, helping ensure that future studies meet the real-world needs of those they aim to support
  • Be part of a supportive group where your lived experience is valued and respected
 What support is offered?
