Help shape research on the health impacts of fuel poverty in Wales

Public Health Wales and Administrative Data Research Wales is preparing a funding application to the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) as part of the ‘Healthy Homes’ call. This proposed study will explore whether government-funded energy efficiency schemes improve the health of people living in cold or poorly insulated homes — and how many other households with similar needs could benefit.

We are looking for a public contributor with lived experience of fuel poverty. Your insights will help us design a research project that is meaningful, relevant, and capable of influencing real policy change. You will be invited to share your perspective during the bid development phase and, if the bid is successful, contribute to ongoing discussions as the research progresses.

This is an opportunity to be part of research that could lead to improved housing, better health, and a more equitable future for communities across Wales.

What experience do I need to help?

No previous research experience is needed — your lived experience is what matters most.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be asked to share your personal experiences and insights to help shape and inform the research. This may include:

  • Giving feedback on the research design to ensure it reflects the realities of people living in fuel poverty
  • Helping the team understand what works, what doesn’t, and what could be improved in current support schemes
  • Providing your perspective on research findings to ensure they are interpreted in a meaningful and relevant way
  • Supporting the development of outputs that are accessible and impactful for a wide audience
How long will I be needed for?
  • Attend an initial online meeting in August 2025 to meet the research team and give feedback on the draft funding application (1 hour).
  • Provide input on responses to funder questions if the bid is shortlisted in November 2025 (1 hour).
  • If funding is awarded, attend monthly one-hour online meetings from July 2026 to July 2028 to review research progress and findings, and share your perspective as someone with lived experience.
  • Before each meeting, review any materials shared in advance (up to 1 hour of preparation time per month).
What are some of the benefits for me?

Benefits include:

  • Making a difference: Play an active role in research that seeks to influence government policy and improve service design.
  • Having your voice heard: Your lived experience will be valued and recognised as an essential part of the research team.
  • Developing new skills: Gain experience in research, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration.
  • Growing in confidence: Contribute to work that respects and acknowledges your expertise.
  • Connecting with others: Work alongside researchers, policymakers, and peers with shared interests or experiences.
 What support is offered?

We will offer:

  • You will be supported throughout the project, with a clear point of contact and regular opportunities to ask questions, share feedback, and shape your role.
  • Payment for your time in line with NIHR recommended rates
  • Training and support to help you take part
  • Cover reasonable travel expenses and additional carer or childcare costs,
  • Offer payment for time of £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).
