Help shape research on platelet transfusions for cancer patients

Share your experiences to help shape research into platelet transfusions for cancer patients.

Cardiff Metropolitan University is inviting patients, carers and people who donate blood to take part in a one-hour online focus group in October 2025. They would like them to talk about their experiences of platelet transfusions, especially for people with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)—and what matters most to patients and donors.

What experience do I need to help?

You should have experience of the following:

  • Have or have cared for someone with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)
  • A strong interest in platelet transfusions or blood cancer
  • No research skills are required; however, knowledge of platelet transfusions and blood cancer is preferable.
What will I be asked to do?

Before the session, you’ll receive a short, easy-to-read summary of the research (no more than one A4 page).

During the session, you’ll be invited to:

  • Share your experiences of platelet transfusions or blood donation
  • Talk about what’s most important to patients, carers and donors
  • Help the researcher understand your priorities, concerns and questions
  • Give suggestions on how to make the research more relevant and meaningful
How long will I be needed for?

One hour for the online focus group.

What are some of the benefits for me?

Benefits to you:

  • Have your say – your views will directly shape research that could improve platelet transfusions for cancer patients.
  • Make a difference – help ensure the study focuses on what matters most to patients, carers and donors.
  • Learn something new – gain insight into platelet transfusions, blood cancer and the research process.
 What support is offered?
  • Cover reasonable travel expenses and additional carer or childcare costs,
  • Offer payment for time of £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).
