Help shape research on vaping laws in the UK

Cardiff University is inviting young people aged 14–21 with experience of vaping to help shape research on the impact of new UK vape and tobacco laws.

Cardiff University is developing a research project to understand how the new UK laws banning disposable vapes from June 2025 and the upcoming tobacco legislation will affect young people. Cardiff University is looking for young people aged 14–21 who have experiences of vaping to join small online groups and help shape the research.

What experience do I need to help?
  • Have experience of vaping, or know others who vape
  • Are willing to share your views in a small, informal online discussion group
What will I be asked to do?

You’ll be invited to take part in a one-hour online group discussion with a small number of other young people (up to four per group).

During the session, you'll be asked to:

  • Share your thoughts on our research idea
  • Help shape the questions we plan to ask young people in future interviews
  • Suggest ways we can recruit young people to take part in the study
  • Give feedback on how we talk about vaping and nicotine use

You don’t need to prepare anything or have any special knowledge. We’ll guide the discussion and explain everything clearly.

How long will I be needed for?

At this stage, we’re asking for just one hour of your time to take part in an online discussion group.

What are some of the benefits for me?

By getting involved, you’ll have the chance to:

  • Shape real research that could influence laws and policies about vaping and tobacco
  • Share your voice and help researchers understand what matters to young people
  • Gain experience of being involved in a research project
  • Develop skills in communication, teamwork and critical thinking
  • Meet other young people and contribute to something that could make a difference
 What support is offered?
  • Clear explanations of the research
  • Discussion questions provided during the session – no need to prepare
  • Flexible timing
  • A named contact who you can email with any questions before or after the session
  • Offer payment for time of up to £25.00 per hour (people can request less if they are in receipt of state benefits).

For those in receipt of state benefit confidential advice is available via the Benefits Advice Service for Involvement.
