Dr Thomas Massey

Specialty Lead for Neurological Disorders

Dr Tom Massey is an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellow and Honorary Consultant Neurologist based at Cardiff University and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

He primarily researches Huntington’s disease and other repeat expansion disorders, using insights from human genetics to identify new therapeutic targets. None of these diseases has a disease-modifying treatment and so there remains a significant unmet clinical need. Tom co-founded the HD Centre in Wales in 2024 to promote cross-disciplinary research projects in this disease area.

As a Neurologist Tom sees patients in clinic and has been heavily involved in clinical trials in Huntington's disease. As specialty lead he has developed increased opportunities for Welsh patients to participate in motor neuron disease research, bringing in new funding through the EXPERTS-ALS platform trial and the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Looking forward, Tom aims to increase the breadth of clinical research in Neurology and Neurodegeneration in Wales, bringing together patients, researchers and clinicians in under-served disease areas.

His work is supported by the Medical Research Council, Moondance Foundation, Guarantors of Brain, Academy of Medical Sciences, Association of British Neurologists/Patrick Berthoud Charitable Trust, Brain Research Trust and the European Huntington’s Disease Network.
