New NIHR global health research funding open to Welsh researchers

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) will be launching funding initiatives over the next year to support global health research, alongside the global focus on COVID-19. All initiatives will be open to applicants from Wales.

Since its inception in 2016, the NIHR Global Health Research programme has supported high-quality applied health research for the benefit of people in low and middle income countries. The programme supports areas of applied health research and training that are under-funded or where there is an unmet need, and aims to reduce health inequalities.

Launch dates and call windows for the new programme have been adjusted to balance the response to COVID-19, alongside continuing to deliver global health research opportunities.

NIHR Global Health Research Units

Closes: 13:00 on 18 November 2020

These awards will provide funding to a well-established, equitable research partnership or network of universities and research institutes in low- and middle-income countries countries and the UK with an existing track-record of delivering internationally recognised applied global health research.

NIHR Global Health Research Groups

Closes: 13:00 on 18 November 2020

These awards will provide funding to collaborations of specialist researchers within universities and research institutes in in low- and middle-income countries the UK who wish to establish new programmes of applied health research.

NIHR Global Health Research Workshop Fund Award Pilot (2020)

Closes: 01 December 2020

This scheme allows NIHR Academy members (PhD and post-doctoral only) based in the NIHR Global Health Research Programmes the opportunity to plan and lead a workshop.

Travel and subsistence funding to support LMIC engagement during the COVID-19 outbreak

Closes: 31 December 2020

These awards will provide travel and subsistence funding to appropriately qualified public health professionals, clinicians and academics who wish to offer science and technical advice to support the immediate response to COVID-19 in low and middle-income countries.

NIHR School for Public Health Research

Closes: 28 January 2021

Institutional Research Capacity Strengthening for NCDs

Potential advert date: 31 October 2020

These awards will provide substantive funding to strengthen research capacity in low- and middle-income countries to undertake and manage high-quality research to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

NIHR Research and Innovation for Global Health Transformation (RIGHT) Call 4

Potential advert date: 01 November 2020

These awards will provide funding to address the global burden of injuries, accidents, urgent and emergency care in low- and middle-income countries through high quality, interdisciplinary applied health research.

Global Health Systems and Policy Research - Researcher-led call

Potential advert date: 01 March 2021

These awards will provide funding to research consortia to deliver global health research to improve whole health systems and health services for people in LMICs through equitable partnerships.
