Nigel joined the Emergency Ambulance Service in Wales in 1989, and has a long-standing interest in pre-hospital and emergency care research. He is an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner and Assistant Director of Research and Innovation for the Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust.
Nigel is a Fellow of the College of Paramedics and was awarded the Queens Ambulance Medal in the 2017 New Year’s honours list.
Nigel has been Chief Investigator on trials investigating paramedic initiated fascia iliaca compartment block for hip fracture and the feasibility of paramedic referral to specialist transient ischaemic attack clinic. He has also been the Welsh Principle Investigator on some of the largest studies conducted in ambulance services, including the PARAMEDIC-2 trial of adrenaline in out of hospital cardiac and RIGHT-2 trial investigating rapid intervention with glyceryl trinitrate in hypertensive stroke trial.
Nigel regularly presents at national and international conferences, and has published over 70 peer reviewed journal articles, some of which are in high quality journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet. Nigel is an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Paramedic Practice, and a peer reviewer for many journals along with the National Institute for Health and Care Research and National Research Scotland. He is also a member of national research funding panels and Trial Steering Committees.
