To develop original research within gynaecology oncology

I intend to use this award to develop and grow original research within gynaecology oncology in Cardiff (and Wales); this is something that is currently relatively lacking.

I would like to conduct research that raises the profile of Wales internationally and enthuses and inspires trainees to get involved in research. By achieving this, I believe that we can raise the standard of care delivered to our patients and inspire future trainees to participate in research, enhancing their career satisfaction and improve recruitment in Wales.

I am specifically focusing on vulval cancer where, compared to other gynaecological cancers, research activity is far less abundant despite the 15% increase in incidence (due to increased HPV prevalence) since the 1990s. Of concern, vulval cancer is increasingly affecting younger women in whom the impact of treatments such as vulvectomy and radiotherapy have long-lasting effects.

There is a significant need for a stronger evidence base in order to help prevent this disease and provide treatments that, whilst oncologically safe, may reduce the impact on the patient.
