Professor Tamas Szakmany

Specialty Lead for Critical Care

Professor Szakmany is a Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and Senior Lecturer in Intensive Care at Cardiff University. He is one of the clinical leads of the All Wales Critical Care and Trauma Network. Tamas graduated at the University of Pecs, Hungary, where he then went on to gain his PhD in Critical Care. He moved to the UK in 2004 and to Wales in 2008. His main research interests are monitoring and modulation of inflammatory response in sepsis and after major surgery. He was the UK national coordinator of the International Surgical Outcomes Study and the Welsh cluster lead for the ‘Effectiveness of a national quality improvement programme to improve survival after emergency abdominal surgery’ (EPOCH) study. He is actively recruiting patients into several perioperative clinical trials and has been recently appointed as a Board Member of the Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network.

Tamas has always been passionate to work with medical students, to help them realising their potential and involving them in research projects such as the annual point-prevalence study to discover what is the real burden of sepsis on the general ward setting in Wales.

As a practicing Intensive Care Unit Consultant, he is very interested in why patients develop prolonged multi- organ failure and he hopes that translational research with the immunology group in Cardiff University will provide new options in their care.
