Welsh researchers contribute to UK review into health and care services for people with learning disabilities

The National Institute for Health Research’s (NIHR) latest themed review Better Health and Care for All: health and care services for people with learning disabilities has been published online.

The review draws upon research conducted across the UK, including contributions from Welsh researchers.

Ruth Northway, Professor of Learning Disability Nursing at University of South Wales worked as part of the expert advisory group for the report.

Evidence was also drawn from a study led by Professor Paul Willner, Swansea University, and worked on by a number of Welsh researchers. The journal article explores the delivery of anger management interventions to people with intellectual disabilities.

This review brings together evidence from 23 NIHR-funded studies and examines four main areas of service delivery and user experience: identifying health risks; keeping well in the community; staying safe and well in hospital; and services supporting positive behaviour. 

It is hoped that the review’s insights will help show areas where more research is needed to shape future services.
