Make sure our research is relevant to patients and the public.

Health and Care Research Wales runs several funding schemes and members of the public are needed to help review applications to those schemes to ensure the research we fund is relevant to patients. 

Our team would like your help to assess and review research applications to our latest Integrated Funding Scheme focused call on “Communication in women’s health”.  This call aims to find better ways to share information with women about their health, help healthcare workers communicate more clearly and ensure women feel listened to and understood when using health and social care services.

What experience do I need to help?
  • personal or care-giving experience related to women’s health, such as menopause, fertility, pregnancy or chronic health conditions
  • experience of using health and social care services in Wales 
What will I be asked to do?

You will be asked to:

  • review funding applications and give your thoughts and feedback. This will help decide which research projects receive funding.
  • contribute to discussions that take place at the board meetings.
  • review applications prior to the funding board meeting.
  • be familiar with the public involvement plans for each application.
  • understand health inequalities and the importance of ensuring all voices are heard in health and social care research.
  • interest in research and public involvement.
  • to be able to attend an in-person meeting on 11 November 2025.
  • feedback on your experiences of reviewing the applications.
How long will I be needed for?
  • You will be needed to attend a one-hour virtual  support meeting to meet the team supporting you through your involvement.
  • Applications may take between 1-2 days to review depending on how many are received in the funding call.
  • You will also be expected to attend a full day, in-person meeting in Cardiff ?? on 11 November where the applications will be discussed.

What support is offered?
  • Cover reasonable carer or childcare expenses.
  • Payment for time will be paid depending on the total number of applications reviewed at the panel/board meeting and the Daily rate is for reviewing 1-10 applications is £275 and then 11+ applications is  £350
  • Dedicated person to provide support,
  • Support session for using the tools to score the applications and to brief you on the role as a board member. You will be reimbursed £25 for this meeting.
