Brain Awareness Week 2023

This Brain Awareness Week (March 13 – 19 2023) we want to share some of the incredible research that is going on in Wales looking at the brain and neurological conditions.

In Wales, we have a dedicated BRAIN (Brain Repair and Intracranial Neurotherapeutics) research unit where experts from across Wales work together and with people affected by neurological conditions to develop and carry out research that will have a positive impact on those affected and their families.

There are lots of different brain and neurological conditions which have a massive impact on people living with them. Research into best practice, new and innovative treatments and preventative measures are important to ensure people are getting the best care possible to live their lives well.

Here is a small selection of some of the research being carried out:

Treatment for the brain and the mind:

Treatment for Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) usually focuses only on rehabilitation. Professor Andrew Kemp and his team at Swansea University have been researching a new treatment that focuses on wellbeing as well as rehabilitation to improve outcomes for people living with ABI.

Positive mealtimes for improved quality of life:

Brain conditions can impact on quality of life in various ways. Something we take for granted, such as eating and drinking, can be affected. Find out about research into creating a positive mealtime experience and why it is important:

Transplants: Science not science fiction:

Brain transplants are often seen in movies but here in Wales we are researching whether neural transplants can improve neurodegeneration in conditions like Huntington’s disease. This isn’t science fiction but it is science!
