Access model agreements

You can access nationally approved, standard research agreements for non-commercial and commercial research below.

These agreements help ease study set up, reducing the time taken to negotiate terms and conditions with sponsors. Specific guidance should be followed by sponsors, researchers and sites and this is provided with the templates.

Various model agreements are applicable depending on who is involved in the research.

Commercial model agreements

Model clinical trial agreement 2020 (mCTA 2020) – this is intended for use for formalising a bipartite relationship between the industry sponsor and the NHS organisation where the clinical trial is being conducted.

Clinical research organisation model clinical trial agreement 2020 (CRO mCTA 2020) – this is intended for use for formalising a tripartite relationship between the industry sponsor, the CRO managing the clinical trial and the NHS organisation where the clinical trial is being conducted.

Model clinical investigation agreement Wales 2014 (mCIA Wales 2014) – this is intended for use for formalising a bipartite relationship between the industry sponsor and the Welsh NHS organisation where research involving a medical device is being conducted.

Model clinical research organisation model clinical investigation agreement Wales 2014 (CRO mCIA Wales 2014) – this is intended for use for formalising a tripartite relationship between the medical device industry sponsor, the CRO managing the clinical trial and the Welsh NHS organisation where research involving a medical device is being conducted.

Primary care model clinical trial agreement Wales 2013 – this is intended for use for formalising a bipartite relationship between the industry sponsor and primary care where the clinical trial is being conducted.

Non-commercial model agreements

UK-wide model non-commercial agreement (mNCA) 2018 – the model non-commercial agreement (mNCA) template is structured to meet the requirements of non-commercial sponsors and the NHS (or other) bodies undertaking the research. 

Model participant identification centre agreements

Model non-commercial participant identification centre agreement (mNC-PICA) - this is intended for use between organisations participating as research sites in non-commercially sponsored research and NHS/HSC organisations acting as their participant identification centres (PICs).

Model commercial participant identification centre agreement (mC-PICA) - this is intended for use between organisations participating in commercially sponsored research and NHS/HSC organisations acting as their participant identification centres (PICs).
